Rain Cape "Wassermann" made of Wax Cotton

Do you know the saying "There is no bad weather, only bad clothing"? Well, we say that there is bad weather indeed! And there is a worst-case scenario for hunters: those who have spent time on a driven hunt stand in continuous rain, where there is no escape, know what we mean, especially when not adequately prepared in terms of rain protection.

Wax Cotton: The perfect complement to our loden products

Our WALDKAUZ loden has excellent properties when it comes to moisture and wetness, but it also has its limits. Therefore, we have been searching for a real protective shield for a while, something that could serve as a serious fortress against continuous rain. We found it in rainy England, the birthplace of wet weather: English wax cotton, as the name suggests, is made of waxed cotton and has been highly valued for centuries by sailors, farmers, shepherds, and hunters when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

A rain cape specifically designed for hunting & outdoor activities

The cut of the cape is designed to cover a wide range of hunting as well as hiking and everyday situations optimally. It is open on the sides but expanded in the upper arm area, creating a kind of "awning" over the arms. This provides rain protection for the arms while ensuring good ventilation. This prevents overheating of the upper body during movement. The side opening also offers several advantages in terms of freedom of movement and usage: Under the front part of the cape, the firearm can be carried, keeping important components such as the receiver, bolt, and optics dry. In addition, the freedom of movement in aiming is preserved because the elbow and forearm can be taken out of the cape's side. The back area is large enough to accommodate a backpack, and when it gets windier, the cape can be secured around the waist using the two side straps. The length of the rain cape is designed with the motto "as short as possible and as long as necessary." It should not be too large and obstructive during stalking but should still cover the knees when sitting. The rain cape is also fantastic for leisure activities. Whether hiking with or without a backpack, going for a rainy walk with the dog, or especially when cycling: The two loops on the inner front side allow it to be held securely above the bicycle handlebars against headwind, providing a practical shelter that protects the entire body. The hood is ergonomically designed to minimize the tendency to fold over the eyes. The face opening can be tightened with an elastic band, and the splash-proof zipper can be closed up to the chin. To prevent the hood from sliding too far down the face, it has an adjustable strap at the back of the head. The cape weighs 1050 grams and can be folded down to 30x20x4 cm, making it easy to transport on top of a backpack.

Impregnation:

If the wax layer of the rain cape diminishes over time and no longer provides the desired rain protection, the waxed cotton can be rewaxed, just like with a waxed jacket! There are several wax-based impregnation products available in the market that quickly solve this issue and significantly extend the cape's lifespan.

What to expect from waxed fabrics

There is a lot of half-knowledge and some misconceptions about waxed fabrics, also known as waxed cotton, wax cotton, or waxed polycotton. We explain in more detail what these fabrics can do in our STEINKAUZ-blog.
