The Bushcrafting Spaceship for friends of stylish equipment
The fact that "Bushmann" is spelled with "sh" is not a typo but rather part of its concept: The voluminous bushcrafting backpack was developed according to the wishes of our "wilderness-roaming customers." To be precise, the idea originated during a trip to Sweden with Sven, the YouTuber and blogger known as "Outdoor-Individualist", when we lived together on a small island in Swedish Dalsland for the shooting of our "Ode to the Outdoors" in October 2018.
The Bushmann is robust, rustic, and highly adaptable. Its large exterior pockets provide space for a lot of equipment in addition to the 44-liter main compartment. The numerous loops allow the attachment of additional pockets, luggage rolls, and other items to the exterior. Robust British 10-oz waxed cotton, even doubled in the lid, protects the equipment from rain and inclement weather. An ergonomic and adjustable carrying system with padded leather straps and a removable chest and waist belt allows for fatigue-free transport of the equipment. We even thought of adding a removable leather holder for an axe.
But, of course, it wouldn't be a STEINKAUZ product if we weren't a bit vain and hadn't put a lot of effort into the design. Thus, a material mix of waxed cotton, leather, felt, loden, aluminum, and sturdy poly webbing has been created, making the Bushmann stand out even more.
Sleeping bag or bedroll, sleeping mat, blanket, a one-person tent, or a hammock, tarp, cookware, hobo stove and cooking equipment, knife, axe, loden jacket, provisions, and spare clothes: we managed to fit everything inside this beast of a backpack and extensively tested it on foot and in a canoe in Germany and Sweden (as we do with all our new products). Conclusion: We are really proud of it!
On the front exterior, there's a grease nubuck leather ax holder combined with a fabric tunnel that can accommodate an axe or folding shovel. Numerous loops, similar to a MOLLE system but less "military" in appearance, offer individual and versatile options for securing personal items to the outer surface.
The lid is infinitely adjustable and quickly and easily hooked in and out with the two indestructible aluminum hooks. The back is lightly padded with loden. The carrying straps are also padded with leather and felt and are ergonomically and comfortably positioned thanks to an angle. The detachable chest strap and the waist strap with its ingenious, pilot-style closure help distribute the weight cleanly across the shoulders, chest, and hips. Finally, a large zipper pocket inside provides secure storage for important documents and the necessary tour budget.

Designed from top to bottom for the outdoor experience
The large main compartment offers approximately 44 liters of volume with its 70x30x21 cm size and is closed with a simple drawstring. The spacious exterior pockets (2 in the front and two mesh pockets on the sides) not only provide a lot of additional storage space but also help give each piece of equipment its designated place. The side mesh pockets can be used either flat or extended using Velcro. This way, you can choose to store smaller and flatter items such as maps, tinder supplies, knives, or other equipment, or in the open state, you can place a large water bottle there. Okay, at approximately 1700g, it's not for the faint-hearted, but we're not aiming to set any performance records with this piece; rather, we're championing truly stylish equipment. On the front exterior, there's a grease nubuck leather ax holder combined with a fabric tunnel that can accommodate an axe or folding shovel. A good friendship requires maintenance
Those who want their equipment to last should know how to take care of it. However, if you've ever owned a waxed jacket, you know that wax cotton doesn't require too much attention. If the material is heavily used, its resistance to rain may weaken over time, but this usually takes quite a while. In such a case, you can simply re-impregnate the fabric with a wax block or a wax spray. When waxing with a wax block, apply the impregnation by rubbing and then use a hairdryer to heat it. The wax will melt and penetrate deep into the cotton fiber. Wax sprays are usually just sprayed on and rubbed in a bit. Please don't be surprised if the backpack appears unusually dark when unpacking. The cotton is heavily waxed, and that's why it looks so dark. Through use, the wax wears off, and your backpack will look as pictured.
The robust grease nubuck leather also requires little care. Only if it seems a bit dry after rainy tours, it should be treated with some leather grease or impregnating wax.

What to expect from waxed fabrics
There is a lot of half-knowledge and some misunderstandings about waxed fabrics, also known as waxed cotton, wax cotton, or waxed polycotton. We explain what these fabrics can do in more detail in our STEINKAUZ-blog.Colour: | Green, Olive |
