PEDALIST men's cycling jacket
As avid cyclists, whether it’s a short ride to the office, a weekend outing, or more serious bikepacking tours over 14 days in adverse weather conditions, one of our loden jackets often accompanies us. Over the years, we’ve realized that a cycling jacket made from this natural material is missing on the market.
Our research confirmed this: Cycling jackets for the transitional and cold seasons are in demand, and there is a lot of discussion about this topic in bike forums. However, what’s available so far are the typical cycling jackets made of synthetic fibers, often with membranes and sometimes with a small wool content.
A proper cycling jacket was needed, so we developed a suitable cut: A bit shorter in the front, longer in the back, but still wearable in everyday life. The sleeves are long enough to keep the wrists covered even in a bent posture. We opted for the so-called raglan cut for the sleeves, as it provides plenty of freedom of movement. We consciously avoided reflective stripes so that everyone can wear the jacket "just because." If necessary, you can simply strap on a light belt for safety.
Thus, our "Pedalist" cycling jacket was born. We have long sworn by the natural material loden, and even in this application, it stands out due to its many excellent properties:
The hollow structure of the wool fiber provides thermal insulation. It absorbs body heat in cold conditions and stores it in its hollow spaces. However, you won't experience overheating with loden: Loden is known for its temperature-regulating effect, and it’s true—you just feel comfortable, even when exerting yourself! Loden is not waterproof but water-repellent. In reality, loden handles water differently compared to, for example, membrane fabrics or coated textiles, and thus cannot be easily categorized.
Loden works with moisture from both inside and outside, regulating it while providing optimal breathability. Wool fibers can absorb up to 30% of their own weight in moisture without feeling wet. When the outer fibers are saturated, they form a natural barrier against the penetration of even more water.
For example, our loden fleece becomes wet on the outside when it rains, but it takes a long time for the moisture to reach the interior. During a typical light summer rain, you can sometimes be out for several hours with a loden fleece jacket before it feels wet inside. This works the same way in reverse, ensuring that the moisture released by the body is absorbed by the wool and released into the environment. Thus, a loden jacket almost always feels pleasantly dry, even if you start sweating. A disadvantage of loden is a longer drying time compared to synthetic fibers. Fortunately, it’s not a myth that wool insulates better than synthetic fibers when wet, and as mentioned, even with 30% residual moisture, the jacket already feels dry again.
This "working" with moisture creates a microclimate in loden that is unmatched.
Loden is sustainable
Wool is a renewable resource and biodegradable. As a pure natural fiber, it does not remain in the ecosystem and therefore does not cause any harm. Our loden is made in Germany and is therefore not only fairly produced but also meets the highest quality standards. That it complies with the Oeko-Tex 100 standard goes without saying.
The perfect outdoor material: STEINKAUZ loden fleece
Our loden fleece is made from 100% pure virgin wool, is breathable, warm, and robust. Due to the elaborate double-sided raising process of the loden, the fabric is pleasantly soft and offers a high level of comfort. The natural product loden requires little care: odors disappear in fresh air, and dirt can be left to dry and then brushed off. What makes our special loden fleece stand out are its climate properties. The dense weave of the double-face loden and the fine nap on the surface make the jacket nearly resistant to wind penetration—without any membrane! And precisely because we don't need to use a membrane, the loden fleece remains highly breathable, providing an optimal inner climate.
