Our latest generation outdoor pants: The Wanderbux II

We have reinvented our Wanderbux! After many years of practical use, we have scrutinized all details and developed a whole new generation of our robust yet lightweight outdoor pants. Especially on hut tours in rough terrain, you can't have enough freedom of movement. Therefore, the Wanderbux II uses stable 4-way stretch from the European quality producer IBQ, well-dosed and only where it has a noticeable effect. This has greatly increased the level of freedom of movement while maintaining the "rough" look of the waxed fabric (and thus also its everyday suitability).

Whether for hiking, camping, bushcrafting, hunting, fishing, or just for leisure – the Wanderbux is extremely versatile. Its comfortable cut ensures freedom of movement, and the outer pockets (two open front pockets and two flat, closable side zipper pockets) provide space for gear.

The knee area is ergonomically shaped, and the Velcro strip at the hem allows for individual adjustment of the leg width. Our belt loops accommodate belts up to 4 cm wide, such as the leather belt "Unverwüstling" or the belt "Cargo." The pants are closed with a metal zipper and metal button. The leg circumference can be reduced with a Velcro strap at the hem, which is extremely helpful when cycling with gravel or mountain bikes, as the pants leg is less likely to get caught in the chainring.

The Wanderbux comes with pre-hemmed leg length but can be easily adjusted to the perfect individual length by yourself or at any tailor. The Velcro strap is specially placed to be easily repositioned. After all, nothing beats a well-fitting pair of pants for hiking!

The optimal fabric for summer outdoor pants

Polycotton combines the advantages of cotton and polyester. The fabric is lightweight and airy, with the pleasant feel of cotton, yet stable and strong as expected from outdoor clothing. It dries quickly in the air and is resistant to UV radiation.

In the warm season, this high-quality material combination also brings another important advantage: it is breathable and very comfortable to wear in warm temperatures. Additionally, polycotton is machine washable up to 40°C.

Even within this material, there is a range from cheap to high-quality and durable qualities made from high-quality yarns and a uniform and dense weave. We use selected quality polycotton and the matching, equally high-quality yarns from the company Amann.

PFC-free water-repellent pre-impregnation

The fabric is pre-treated with a PFC-free impregnation to be water-repellent. PFC-free impregnations are environmentally friendly because they do not leave non-degradable residues in nature but need to be refreshed from time to time. We recommend re-impregnating with a wax block and heat, such as the Dr. Gees impregnation wax we offer. Simply rub the wax like an eraser on the fabric and melt it in with an iron at low heat. This takes a few minutes and can be repeated as often as desired. Especially before tours, this treatment provides an additional level of wetness protection.
Every impregnation always affects the breathability of a fabric. For example, if I only want protection against wet meadows in the morning dew, it makes sense to apply the impregnation only to the lower leg areas to maintain the best possible breathability. For longer trekking tours, one would rather prefer a complete impregnation to be maximally protected against rain. But that is the beauty of waxing: you can decide for yourself what makes sense according to the conditions.

What to expect from waxed fabrics

There is much half-knowledge and some misunderstandings about waxed fabrics, also known as waxed cotton, waxcotton, or waxed polycotton. What the fabrics can do, we explain in more detail in our STEINKAUZ-Blog.

How to measure correctly

Waist width
Take a measuring tape and measure your waist width. Measure along the line where you wear your belt. The measuring tape lies loosely and without tension; a shirt can easily be underneath since it might be tucked into the pants later. If you don't have a measuring tape, a string that can be marked and then held against a yardstick will do.

Inseam length
Measure from the crotch to the top of your foot so that the measurement ends about 2-3 cm above the ground.
